Measles in Disneyland

On January 5, 2015, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) was informed about the first measles case linked to Disneyland Park located in Orange County, California. An 11-year-old unvaccinated child has contracted measles after visiting the theme park. The disease spreads and more than 100 people have been diagnosed with measles across the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak started when a traveller visited the amusement park after contracting measles overseas. CDC scientists analysed that the measles virus type in the Disneyland outbreak in California was identical to the virus type that caused the large measles outbreak in the Philippines. This is not the first time that measles affecting the Philippines has been linked to U.S. outbreaks (See previous blog posts about the outbreak in Ohio).
