A 'Perfect Storm' in Ohio

An Amish men travelled to the Philippines during the massive outbreak of measles (See previous blog posts about the outbreak in the Philippines). After returning from the Philippines, he became ill as he was not immunised against measles. He was misdiagnosed with dengue fever and unknowingly spread the disease to whoever he has been in contact with.

At that time, the Amish population was generally against vaccination due to the rumour about the side effects of vaccine – two kids fell sick after taking the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the 1990s. The scientific community has confirmed that vaccines are relatively safe and do not cause autism, but that fear still holds sway among some Amish.
